
MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Residents around Ngerenge area in Karonga have been affected by floods which resulted after River Kasisi bursted.
Some residents who talked to this publication in a random interview said they have lost their properties and livestock.
In his remarks, councillor for the area, Steven Simsokwe told us that no life has been lost.
However, Simsokwe said some residents have been displaced due to the development.
“That’s true. Some residents are homeless and have lost their properties. We need to identify a special area for their refugee,” said Simsokwe.
Simsokwe then called for a quick help from government as well as well wishers.
Reacting to the development, Minister of Sports and Youths who is Member of Parliament for Karonga south, Uchizi Mkandawire said he has asked officials from the Department of Disaster and Management (DODMA) to quickly go and access the situation.
Mkandawire however urged all residents living around the flood prone area to go into upper lands before it is too late.
“I have been told about the development as one of the MPs of the district and I have already asked officials from DODMA to go and access the situation,” he said.
Adding “It is lucky that no life has been lost but if we are not careful, something avoidable will happen.”
Mkandawire told this publication that under President Lazarus Chakwera, the victims will be taking care of and no one will be left helpless.
“Government is already in the process of helping the district from dry spell that has affected thousands of hectares of crops in the district. It is therefore sad to learn about this new situation,” he said.
For almost two month, the district has not received rains a development which has resulted into dry spell.
