…..Wanderers 2-1 Karonga
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Mighty Mukuru Wanderers FC forward Christopher Jaccama Kumwembe scored two goals in the second half of the match to rescue the nomads from the jaws of crocodiles.
Kumwembe cancelled Gabihno Daudi’ goal for Karonga United FC in the 56th minute from a Stanley Sanudi’ well taken corner kick.
The goal came in after the home team struggled to suit the play from the Crocodiles who came at Kamuzu Stadium with a fierce and aggressive approach and no wonder they scored with just 4 minutes into the game.
The Nomads tried to play their game in the first half but failed as Karonga United FC defended their narrow lead.
Chiukepo Msowoya and Vitumbiko Kumwenda missed chances for Wanderers with Sunganani Mponda making some superb saves.
At 25th minute Erick Atsigah cleared Francis Mkonda’ shot from the line. Karonga United FC could have extended their lead capitalizing on Wanderers defence lapse between Emanuel Nyirenda and Ahmad Kang’unde.
The first half ended with the visitors leading by 1-0.
In the beginning of the second half Mark Harrison made four changes in search of the goals as slowly pressure mounted on him since he lost to MAFCO FC in FDH Bank Cup last week at the same venue Kamuzu Stadium 1-0.
Gaddie Chirwa, Wisdom Mpinganjira, Stanley Sanudi and Francisco Madinga replaced Vincent Nyangulu, Emmanuel Nyirenda, Msowoya and Kumwenda and Trevor Kajawa replied by taking out Allen Chihana for Tonny Nyango.
The changes paid dividends for Wanderers as they scored at 56th minute through Kumwembe.
The goal injected power to the nomads who piled pressure to the crocodiles and thanks to goalkeeper Sunganani Mponda who was equal to task.
Wisdom Mpinganjira missed a chance for nomads with only a goalkeeper to beat after he received a very good pass from Sanudi at 73rd minute.
In the 81st minute, Isaac Kaliati’ stunning free kick was denied by the woodwork.
As the match was thought to end in a 1-1 stalemate, Kumwembe scored a late winner at 88th minute to rescue the Nomads who were left wondering from the jaws of crocodiles after he was fed by Francisco Madinga.
Kumwembe revived his chances for a golden boot chase as he took his tally of goals to 9, and he is 4 goals adraft the current top goalscorer Clement Nyondo of Dedza Dynamos FC who has 13.
The win took the Nomads on top of the table with 40 points from 21 games while resilient Chitipa United FC descended to second position with 39 points from the same number of games.
Defending champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets FC who plays Mighty Tigers FC at the same venue Kamuzu Stadium on Thursday 21st September 2023 have chances to reclaim the top spot if they win as they will have 40 points as well but Bullets will have a superiority in goals.
