LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Department of Climate Change and Metalogical Services has predicted that the country will experience La Nina weather conditions especially in the southern region.
Department of Disaster and Management Affair (DODM)’s Director of Response and Recovery, Moses Chimphepo said on Friday, July 12, 2024 when he appeared before Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources.
Chimphepo disclosed that the forthcoming season, rainfall will be suppressed over Northern Malawi while the south receives relatively better rainfall.
He added that the department is seeking MK278 billion to purchase maize equivalent to 261 metric tones for food relief items.
In his remarks, Principal Secretary for Natural resources, Yusuf Mkungula said the ministry will be giving seasonal focus.
Mkungula said the department will embark on different activities that help Malawians to be awakening on the upcoming disaster.
The committee’s Chairperson Welani Chilenga said the DODMA has not done much on preventive measures.
Chilenga said the committee will lobby for the funds that the department is looking for to purchase 261 metric tones on maize for food relief.
“As a committee will see that they are not doing enough in how they are going to prevent the disaster but we will try to lobby for funds in the next upcoming seating of Parliament,” said Chilenga.
