As Gassah of Politics and Elections Platform continues to mourn the passing of Rt Hon Saulos Chilima (SKC), he has chosen to express his thoughts after a period of reflection. Gassah feels that the recent rapid developments within the United Transformation Movement (UTM) resemble a frenzied race triggered by an unexpected event, rather than a measured transition.

He is troubled by the way internal divisions are surfacing within UTM. He observes that some individuals, who were once followers of SKC, seem to lack a clear understanding of UTM’s vision and mission. Instead of uniting to address the party’s challenges and advance its goals, there is a growing sense of disarray and conflict, which he believes is counterproductive.
Gassah expresses concern about the recent decision-making processes under Mr. Usi’s leadership. He believes that holding a rally without the participation of UTM’s executive members undermines the party’s unity and coherence. Gassah uses a metaphor to highlight his point: “Mthiko ukhoza kukhala muzanja lanu koma Nsima kugudubuka ndiye kuti nsima singaphikikenso,” meaning that while you may have the potential to succeed, without proper processes and unity, your efforts may fail.
He stresses that UTM, like any organization, has rules and traditions that need to be respected. The late SKC was known for honoring these rules and guiding the party with a clear vision. Gassah argues that Usi should have awaited the upcoming meeting on July 19 to collectively discuss the future direction of the party, rather than acting unilaterally.
While Gassah does not call for the resignation of those holding ministerial positions, he emphasizes the importance of understanding and respecting the responsibilities and commitments associated with these roles. It is crucial that individuals in leadership positions remain aligned with the party’s core values and vision.
He concludes with a strong call for unity within UTM. He reiterates the party’s great vision and the need for all members to work together with courage and determination. His message underscores the importance of a unified approach in advancing the party’s mission and contributing to the betterment of Malawi.
In summary, Gassah’s reflections highlight the need for UTM to maintain its unity and adhere to its established principles as it navigates this transitional period. His emphasis on respecting party rules and working together reflects a desire to honor SKC’s legacy and ensure that UTM continues to thrive.
