The Democratic Progressive Party is a collection of interesting people. An arrogant lot if I have to be frank. One thing they cannot stop doing is inviting battles to their yard. Or if they are not, they will deliberately switch to a self-destruction mode.
You must have seen them those two years they warmed the opposition benches. They sounded real and repentant. They looked down to earth. They promised a ‘born again’ DPP if voted back into power. Life, the good teacher, must be disappointed with the DPP. You see, life has been fair to DPP by all means. It made them travel the modern day desert journey from biblical Egypt to Canaan incomplete with Manna during JB regime! Free lesson that disappointingly they are failing to learn from.
With one year on the clock, Malawians have on the cards the same DPP coming back to haunt them. A master minder of bad laws, you have to be afraid if you hear of impending social network regulatory laws! A tougher modern day Zacheus, if they won’t tax you for offal’s this time, they will tax your village folks for sending mobile messages on top of taxing you for just about everything.
They will realised that the country is not yet at a stage where they can finance the close to 1 trillion kwacha budget. Yet they will arrogantly speak to some well-meaning donors in the face that DPP will go it alone! And then, behind the curtains, kneel everyday begging for the same budgetary support! Ha-ha! Talk of ‘Matama a finye’.
The DPP will act a listening lot when the parliament session is in progress. Especially before the passing of the budget. They will act like dumb fools but wait until the passing of the budget. All the arrogance will return to display. If you thought you were being consulted on a sale of some bank, you will be utterly dismayed! They will arrogantly declare that the consultation has been fruitful and hence the bank has been sold off! They will even ask you to go rot in hell if you dare question the importance of throwing a royal party in times that call for austerity.
Such is the danger of having arrogance embedded in your DNA that you slowly start failing to notice that you are going off the track. Such that when some well-meaning individuals take it upon themselves to remind you that you are dangerously moving off track, you or your agents foam all over the mouth in trying to justify your actions. Such is the danger of arrogance that I will not mention that at the pace DPP is moving they may lose the war in 2019 for fear of reprisals.
