Mutharika assures Chief justice Andrew Nyirenda that he will not interfere with Judicial Branch

In an effort to build public trust and confidence in the judicial service, President Prof Arthur Peter Mutharika has advised the newly sworn in Chief justice, Andrew Nyirenda, SC, to work towards reforming the public legal body by ensuring professionalism, timeliness and efficiency in its operations.

 

The word of counsel was made on Wednesday during the swearing in ceremony for the newly appointed legal head held at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre.

 

 

“We will not interfere with your work to ensure that justice delivery systems are efficient, timely and effective for an independent judiciary is necessary in ensuring a safe and secure Malawi,” said president Mutharika.

 

On timeliness, President Mutharika emphasized on the need to timely pass judgments to ensure effective justice delivery system.

 

“Suspects are sometimes remanded for too long in our prisons without being taken to court. These are the issues that are being reported and Malawians are demanding swift action on them,” explained Mutharika.

 

President Mutharika assured the chief justice of government’s support without interference in their service delivery to the public.

 

“My administration will continue to respect the rule of law as provided for under our statutes and will not interfere with your work to ensure that justice delivery systems are efficient, timely and effective,” emphasized the president.
