BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on Wednesday unveiled students from Lilongwe Girls Secondary School (LGSS) as ambassadors in the fight against human trafficking.
This follows the school’s victory in the Association of Teaching English in Malawi (ATEM) drama competition, where they performed a powerful stage production titled ‘Asimenye: A Tale of Shackled Voices.’
The play, centered on the theme of human trafficking, tells the story of a girl named Asimenye who falls victim to trafficking after being awarded a scholarship to study abroad.

UNODC National Programme Officer Maxwell Matewere praised the students for using theatre to raise awareness about human trafficking, a critical issue that disproportionately affects young girls.
He emphasized the importance of the students’ work in educating others about the dangers of human trafficking.
“What the girls did is very important in raising awareness on human trafficking, and they deserve to be celebrated and encouraged to continue what they are doing,” said Matewere.
LGSS patron Desiree Namatchotsa expressed gratitude to UNODC for the recognition and commended ATEM for providing a platform for students to address social issues through drama.
The students were honored at a ceremony held at the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) offices in Lilongwe, where they were treated to a luncheon.
