BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In a shocking turn of events, four Malawi Police officers have been arrested for allegedly robbing an Indian national of MK143 million in a well-planned sting operation in Blantyre’s Sunnyside area.

The suspects, identified as Sergeant Leonard Poya, 38, Sergeant Pemphero Kachipapa, 42, Sergeant Fabiano Phillip, 39, and Sergeant John Bokosi, who is still at large, were arrested by the Blantyre CID after a thorough investigation.

According to police reports, the robbery occurred on October 17, 2025, when the victim, Yasin Patel, was lured to Gelato in Sunnyside by two Indian nationals, Nouman Khan and Faraz Khan, who had connived with the police officers to rob him of his money.

The police officers, who were armed, arrived at the scene and took a carton containing K143 million from the victim, pretending to be conducting a routine operation.

The two Indian nationals, who had set up the sting, fled the scene, leaving the victim to be robbed.

The police officers were arrested after the Indian nationals revealed their involvement in the robbery and provided details of the officers’ identities and contact information.

Investigations led to the recovery of some of the stolen money, and the three arrested officers are currently in custody.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the integrity of some police officers in Malawi and the need for thorough vetting and accountability within the force.

The case is still under investigation, and the police are working to apprehend the fourth suspect, Sergeant John Bokosi.

The two Indian nationals, Nouman Khan and Faraz Khan, are also facing charges related to the robbery.
