LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Activist Sylvester Namiwa has been released from Maula Prison in Lilongwe, a day after the High Court granted him bail.
Namiwa, who is Executive Director of the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI), appeared before High Court Judge Mzonde Mvula on Thursday.
The court granted bail but set strict conditions, including a K5 million cash bond.
Because his legal team needed time to meet those conditions, Namiwa spent one more night in custody before walking free.
CDEDI Public Relations Officer (PRO) Promise Thom has confirmed the release.
He has been released from Maula Prison and is now with his family,” said Thom.
While the release brings relief to his family and supporters, the legal battle is far from over.
The court has scheduled 8 September 2026 for the start of his full trial.
Namiwa is facing charges of treason and publication of false news likely to cause alarm.
