Malawi’s top voice of street kids, Chisomo Children’s Club(CCC) has finally spoken in defence of street kids who are being fingered by the general public to be the once behind fires in Malawi.
Speaking to members of the press in Lilongwe following the area 18 inferno, Chisomo Club Executive Director, Charles Gwengwe says it is un fair for the general public to judge the street kids on issues which mainly boarders on laxity of ESCOM.
“The whole thing boarders on ESCOM they are failing to maintain power throughout and as a result when restoring there is high voltage which result into all these fires we are hearing today.” Said Gwengwe.
Gwengwe said the idea of linking street kids and fires is dangerous because it puts lives of the kids in danger.
“What happens is that the public might get angry and start beating up the kids for no apparent reasons,” Said Gwengwe.
Gwengwe gave the example when ESCOM lied some few years ago that the blackout are as a result of a monkey which disturbed the machines.
Meanwhile Gwengwe has asked ESCOM to do their job professionally to avoid the fire tragedy happening in the country.
Fire on Thursday night gutted area 18 market where it destroyed various merchandises.
