BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—The Anti-Corruption Bureau has cleared Malawi Supreme Court Judge, Lovemore Chikopa, of bribery allegations in the presidential election case at the Constitutional Court.

Chikopa was being investigated by the country’s graft-busting body over his alleged involvement in the bribing of the five judges who nullified the 2019 presidential election result.

ACB Director General Reyneck Matemba has told the local media that Chikopa was investigated after Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda alleged that individuals attempted to bribe Constitutional Court judges over their ruling on a petition submitted by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Lazarus Chakwera as well as UTM president Saulos Chilima to challenge the re-election of President Peter Mutharika.

But Matemba has said no incriminating evidence against Justice Chikopa was found.

Chikopa was one of the seven judges of the Supreme Court who delivered the ruling that upheld the ConCourt ruling on Friday last week.

On January 22, the ACB in Blantyre arrested Mpinganjira in connection to allegations of attempts to bribe five Constitutional Court judges presiding over the Presidential Elections Case.

After the arrest of Mpinganjira, the ACB told the general public that they were also investigating an officer in the judiciary and a politician who is not known until now.
