LILONGWE (Maravipost): Besieged Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse government has set National Unity Day as a day of celebration of all cultural festivals from next year.

Many Malawians see this as a ruse to destruct attention for many an ending scandals from a government that is only two years in power.

President Lazarus Chakwera said this on Saturday 26 Nov 2022 during the  Gonapamuhanya Tumbuka Annual Cultural festival at Bolero in Rumphi district.

He said independent cultural groups will still celebrate their heritages on their own, but the day will bring all of them together.

He said the National Day of Unity was established to demonstrate Government’s commitment towards the promotion of the Malawian national identity, social cohesion, cultural cohesion, and national unity.

The State President presided over the National Day of Unity and Dialogue which was introduced this year on 14 October through the Ministry of National Unity. On this special occasion, various groupings from diverse ethnicities, tribes, religious affiliation, and  political background came together at BICC in Lilongwe to celebrate and highlight their heritage and national unity.

Currently his vice President was detained by ACB on the accusations of corruption, another way many see as deflection from his own involvement in other scandals that have consumed his government.
