In the event of a coalition government, an electoral alliance will enhance the negotiating power of opposition parties allowing them to secure better terms and influence policy decisions.
By promoting collaboration among opposition parties, electoral alliances will most likely contribute to a more vibrant democracy by encouraging political engagement and accountability in governance.
In conclusion , the aforementioned points highlight the potential benefits of opposition parties forming alliances in Malawi, particularly in the context of enhancing democratic processes and improving electoral outcomes.

In a significant display of commitment to supporting vulnerable members of society, President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has presented cheques worth K600 million to beneficiaries of the Presidential Charity Initiative.
The funds were raised through a golf tournament held in October 2024 at Limbe Country Club in Blantyre.
During a ceremony at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, President Chakwera handed over cheques to two main beneficiaries: the country’s six public universities and the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA).
Each of the six public universities received K50 million to cover tuition fees for needy students, totaling K300 million.
The universities that benefited are the University of Malawi, Mzuzu University, Malawi University of Science and Technology, Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Kamuzu College of Health Sciences.
The remaining K300 million was allocated to DoDMA for the reconstruction of Muona Primary School in Nsanje, which was destroyed by Tropical Cyclone Freddy.
This initiative aims to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for students affected by the cyclone.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Chakwera emphasized the government’s commitment to empowering the youth through education.

The President’s commitment to education is evident in the government’s efforts to prioritize the development of young people.
By providing financial support to needy students, the government aims to ensure that no one is left behind in pursuing their academic goals.

Tamanda Kumwela, a student from Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), represented fellow needy students at the ceremony.
She commended the President for his support, emphasizing that education is a right and financial barriers should not hinder anyone from achieving it.
“We are grateful for the President’s initiative, which has come at a time when many students are struggling to access education due to financial constraints,” she said.

Atupele Muluzi, a prominent Malawian political figure and former Cabinet Minister, took to his WhatsApp platform to share heartfelt Easter greetings with the Christian community in Malawi and across the world.
In his message, Muluzi extended warm wishes to his “Christian brothers and sisters,” urging them to observe Good Friday with reflection and spiritual depth.
He expressed his desire for the Easter weekend to be a period filled with peace, hope, and renewal for all individuals and their families.
This message comes at a time when Malawians are navigating various social, economic, and political challenges, making his words of encouragement particularly timely and meaningful.
Muluzi’s message goes beyond religious sentiment, emphasizing the importance of national unity and mutual respect among citizens.
He reminded the public that, regardless of religious or political affiliations, it is crucial for Malawians to stand together as “one Malawi.”
Such a call for unity is consistent with Muluzi’s long-standing political philosophy, which has often highlighted national cohesion and peaceful coexistence as key pillars for development.
His message also echoes the broader spirit of Easter, a season that symbolizes sacrifice, resurrection, and the triumph of hope over despair.
By rooting his greeting in these themes, Muluzi not only acknowledges the religious significance of the holiday but also frames it as an opportunity for national introspection and social harmony.
Many Malawians, especially those active on social media and WhatsApp forums, have received the message positively, appreciating its tone of goodwill and inclusivity.
The Easter period in Malawi is traditionally marked by church services, family gatherings, and community outreach activities, and Muluzi’s message serves as a fitting prelude to these events.

By using a personal and direct communication channel like WhatsApp, Muluzi demonstrates a more intimate and accessible approach to public engagement, further bridging the gap between leaders and the citizens.
As Malawians commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Muluzi’s message stands as a reminder that Easter is not only a celebration of faith but also an invitation to recommit to shared values and collective progress.
In his closing line, “Let’s continue to stand together in unity and mutual respect as one Malawi,” Muluzi encapsulates the essence of Easter’s transformative power—encouraging love, togetherness, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Two MPOX cases detected in Lilongwe: Ministry issues public health guidelines
By Burnett Munthali
The Ministry of Health has confirmed that two people in Lilongwe have tested positive for MPOX, raising concerns about the possible spread of the disease in the capital city.
In a statement released late at night, the Ministry reassured the public that there is no need for panic at this stage.
According to the Ministry, the patients are in stable condition and are being closely monitored by health professionals.
The Ministry emphasized that the disease, as explained by the World Health Organization (WHO), is contagious and can spread through direct contact with an infected person.
In particular, WHO warns that people who have multiple sexual partners may be at a higher risk of contracting MPOX.
The organization further advises that individuals should avoid bursting the rashes caused by MPOX or shaving affected areas, unless the lesions have completely dried and healed on their own.
This precaution is meant to prevent further infection and to protect both the patient and others from additional exposure to the virus.
WHO has also recommended that individuals diagnosed with MPOX should isolate themselves to prevent spreading the disease to others.
During the infection period, it is strongly advised that patients refrain from engaging in sexual activity as a measure to reduce the risk of transmission to partners.
The Ministry of Health has echoed these guidelines, urging the public to remain calm but vigilant, and to seek medical attention immediately if they notice any symptoms associated with MPOX.
Health authorities are currently conducting contact tracing to identify anyone who may have been exposed to the virus through close interaction with the confirmed patients.
Efforts are also underway to educate communities about the symptoms of MPOX, how it spreads, and what steps to take to avoid infection.
These symptoms typically include fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion, and a distinctive rash that can appear on the face, hands, or other parts of the body.
The Ministry has also called on community leaders and health workers to help disseminate accurate information and fight misinformation that may lead to fear or stigma.
Although MPOX is not as deadly as some other viral infections, it still poses a serious public health threat, especially if left undetected or mismanaged.
The Ministry assured the public that it is working closely with international health bodies such as WHO to ensure effective response, treatment, and containment of the disease.
Citizens are encouraged to practice good hygiene, avoid close contact with individuals who have visible rashes, and report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility.
This recent development marks a critical moment for Malawi’s public health system, as it tests the country’s preparedness to respond to emerging infectious diseases like MPOX.
The Ministry concluded its statement by reminding the public that early detection and adherence to health guidelines remain key in preventing a wider outbreak.

HARARE-(MaraviPost)-Monday, April 15, 2025 marked Zimbabwean journalist Blessed Mhlanga’s 50th day behind bars. His unlawful arrest and detention is but one of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s many attempts to silence the press and criminalize speech under unconstitutional laws.
Mhlanga, a senior journalist at Heart and Soul TV, has been charged with inciting violence and unrest after interviews with liberation veteran and former ZANU-PF politician Blessed Geza.
Geza accused Mnangagwa of corruption and called for his immediate resignation in the November 2024 and January 2025 interviews Mhlanga conducted with Geza.
Since his arrest on 24 February 2025 for having purportedly violated a section of the criminal law which prohibits transmission of date, Mhlanga has been denied bail an extraordinary three times on the flimsiest of pretexts – including that he might interfere with state witnesses whose identities are not known to him
Mhlanga also suffered arrest in 2022, again seemingly for simply doing his job — covering the attempted arrest of an opposition politician. His arrest and continued detention at present represents the furtherance of a campaign both Mnangagwa and his predecessor, Robert Mugabe, have long waged: ruthlessly targeting independent media and suppressing critical voices.
Nicole Fritz, executive director of the Campaign for Free Expression (CFE), said:,“It is high-time that Blessed Mhlanga have his freedom restored, be returned to his family and be able to conduct his profession unhindered. It is long overtime that the Mnangagwa government cease its relentless suppression of freedom of expression and allow Zimbabweans both to call and organise for better government. We call on the diplomatic community, and on South Africa in particular, to make Blessed Mhlanga’s continued incarceration a matter for general engagement on Zimbabwe-related issues.”
