Malawi, Morocco in barren draw; 2019 AFCON qualifiers

By Lusekero Mhango

Malawi National Team, the Flames dead rubber clash against Morocco ended in a dour stalemate with the  afternoon’s only entertainment arriving at the close of the match from the fans’ missiles in remonstrant to the Referees’ questionable decisions against the hosts.

In a match that had no impact on Group  B qualification permutations as Morocco had already qualified before kick off, the eliminated hosts will be pleased to have wound up their home campaign without either conceding or defeat beating Comoros by a goal and forcing goal-less draws against heavy weights Cameroon and Morocco.

But the result completed a miserable week of international football as Malawi neither scored nor won in both junior and senior team assignments against Zambia and Morocco respectively.

The hosts were sloppy and vulnerable from the start allowing the visitors to boss play especially from the wide areas where Idrissah Oussama (10) and  and Hadraf Zakaria (7) orchestrated offensive forays tormenting Stanley Sanudi and Gome Chirwa who were forced to stay back and keep taps rather than advance.

But their tantalizing  crosses whipped into the box went begging and Flames burst into life easing into the game  after a quarter of an hour’s play with Phiri Junior registering the first effort on target.

Gaba then broke loose  darting inside on the left but no marauding forward timely arrived in the box to connect home.

Otherwise, the visitors showed  far more attacking initiative through  the constant threat  posed by Oussama and Zakaria.

Evergreen goalie Ernest Kakhobwe stayed alert with close range saves and aerial agility to keep the Flames in the game even as Centre back  Cholopi lost his bearings nearly gifting the  Atlas Lions the lead moments before the break.

A rain soaked pitch slowed the pace  and further lowered the quality of the match most of the closing half. Morocco  were however first on the ball constantly robbing possession from the Malawians  who dwelt on the ball a second too long.

Aided by a manifestly biased Angolan officiating crew led by Referee Helder Carvalho who blew against the hosts for every minor infraction, our rhythm  and  tempo were all but frustrated and nipped as the visitors pressed for the opener.

Flames were up against 14 men contrary to FIFA Rules and Regulations.Small wonder the local fans vented their fury through missiles.

If truth be told, the referees indiscretions cannot mask the fact that in their own right the Flames were not only shapeless  but mastered only a solitary  and speculative effort from John Banda with barely 10 minutes left on the clock

.Chester ran at his markers on a few occasions but he was kept in check whilst Chikotis physical presence somewhat punctured the Moroccans stroll at the heart of the park.

Substitutes Binwell Katinji and Micium Mhone respectively in place of Khuda Muyaba  and Gabadinho remained pedestrian failing to inject the requisite verve as well as penetration  though Mhone showed some flashes of individual brilliance.

In the end  there was no winner as both keepers kept a clean sheets, but it was the home fans grumbling the loudest.

  • the open-to-the-public destinations and activations on the course
  • access to the climate-controlled lounge
  • Grey goose 19th hole

  • Vineyard club

  • The promenade and more!

The tournament’s plan was so that guests are on top of the action. With rope lines spanning the full length of all 18 holes. You are so close to the 9th, 10th, 13th, and 14th holes you might feel some of the pre-swing jitters as the golfers do.

You will have a wide variety of slot games to choose from but the one that stands out is Gold Trophy 2 slot. Whether you’re a Golf fanatic or not, you’ll find yourself having a great gaming experience in the comfort of your home!

During the tournament, most eyes were on the one and only Tiger Woods. Woods who made his second start of the season at the Genesis. There are other astonishing players who attracted plenty of attention during the tournament.

Holmes and Thomas had everyone’s attention during the last stretch. With the wind and cold weather that rolled in, they had to be on their A game. Thomas missed the putt in No. 18 in the third round that would have set the 54-hole scoring record. He caught Justine Thomas down the home stretch to win the tournament. He gained a stroke of four shot deficit in the final round and finished with one stroke ahead of Justin Thomas. Holmes made a terrific lag putt to set up a short par putt that won him the tournament.

J.B Holmes carries off the trophy, this will be his fifth PGA Tour victory and first in almost four years. He will walk away with the money prize of $1,332,000. A win that was well deserved.

This year Genesis tournament was a nail-biting event. What did you think of this year’s Genesis Tournament?

Zinedine Zidane rejects Real Madrid’s job

Zinedine Zidane
Zinedine Zidane won nine major honours in three seasons as Real Madrid boss

Zinedine Zidane has rejected the chance to return as manager of Real Madrid, according to former club president Ramon Calderon.

Zidane, 46, left the club last summer five days after winning a third straight Champions League title.

Calderon told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I know that this morning the president [Florentino Perez] called Zidane to ask him back, he said not now.

“He has left open the possibility of coming back in June.”

Zidane shocked Real by walking out just days after a famous win against Liverpool which made him the first manager to win three European Cups in a row and only the third to win three in total – along with Bob Paisley and Carlo Ancelotti.

The former France captain has not managed since.

Real are expected to make sweeping changes after their season was effectively ended by a humiliating last-16 defeat by Ajax.

As well as being out of the Champions League and the Copa del Rey, Real are third in La Liga, 12 points behind leaders Barcelona.

Real replaced Zidane with Spain coach Julen Lopetegui – a move that was a disaster for club, coach and country – but he lasted just four months, with Santiago Solari eventually taking the reins. Now the club are expected to replace him with a third coach this season.

‘No point approaching Mourinho’

Calderon says former Manchester United and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho – who managed Real between 2010 and 2013 – is the favourite for the job, but such a move would be wrong.

“The first option for the president has always, always been Mourinho,” Calderon said.

“But the problem is who is going to run the club in the office? They are talking of the possibility of Zidane or Mourinho – they are completely different coaches with completely different ideas of football.

“It is an erratic and whimsical president who has brought us to this situation.

“There is the option of bringing in Mourinho now, but to me there is no point.

“At this moment of the season anything you do is going to be wrong, I suppose that they will wait until the end of the season but this is very long time, three months, to suffer all the critics and the anger of the fans.

Mario Balotelli films his own goal celebration

When you’re Mario Balotelli it must be hard to keep thinking of new ways to get yourself in the headlines.
On Sunday, he put his Marseille side in front against Saint-Etienne with a brilliant overhead kick, then collected his phone from a cameraman before filming his celebrations with team-mates and uploading them to his Instagram story.

The Italian striker keeps managing it though. Never change, Mario! Marseille won the match 2-0, with former Newcastle winger Florian Thauvin also scoring a penalty.

Balotelli’s goal is the former Manchester City and Liverpool striker’s fourth in six games since joining Marseille from Nice in January. He isn’t the only player to take a selfie during a game.

Former Roma and Italy striker Francesco Totti took a picture of himself celebrating after scoring against Lazio in the Rome derby in 2015.

Malawi under-23 win back-to-back; Belgium bound

Malawi under-23 national football team Coach, Meke Mwase, can afford a smile in Belgium where his wards are on a training tour. defeats, now able to put away the scoring chances ahead of crunch Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Zambia.

This was evident on Tuesday evening when Mike Mkwate’s wonder strike, Hassan Kajoke and Patrick Phiri’s cool finishes earned Malawi a 3-2 win over Belgian top league side, Genk VV, in a training match.

Malawi also beat Roda JC of Holland 1-0 Wednesday courtesy of Chimwemwe Idana’s goal.

In a mobile phone interview  with The Daily on Wednesday, Mwase reflected on the match.

“I told the guys that we came here to learn and we must be seen to be learning by improving with each passing game. What we are learning here is about speed on and off the ball and shooting. Our football in Malawi is a bit slow.

Here we are learning speed and aggression.

“In the first and second games, we played well but did not score enough goals. We got it right in the third game. All the goals were well constructed with build ups from the back, resulting in Mkwate making a solo run then scoring from close range before Genk equalised and scored again. We scored again through Kajoke and Phiri after playing quick one-twos,” Mwase said.

Such lessons would be handy for the under-23 as they host Zambia on March 20 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, followed by the reverse fixture six days later in Lusaka.

Football analyst, George Kaudza-Masina, Wednesday said although the training environment in Belgium would motivate the players, the Flames went there without a proper plan.

“It is good to camp outside the country but we expect an improved performance against Zambia. Our problems are scoring and goalkeeping. I doubt if the trip to Belgium would address the problems,” Kaudza-Masina said.

The overall winner between Malawi and Zambia date either Burundi or Congo Brazzaville in the next round scheduled for June 2019, with the best team from this stage qualifying for the Under-23 Afcon finals scheduled for Egypt in November 2019.

Top three performers from the continental event would qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Qualifying for the Afcon finals guarantees a place at All Africa Games scheduled for Morocco in August 2019.

The junior Flames started the Belgium tour with 3-1 losses to STVV and Oud-Heverlee Leuven. Malawi has scored five goals and conceded eight in the three matches.

The junior Flames will finish their preparations by stopping over in Egypt for a friendly before returning home.

FAM gives Karonga stadium management 20 days ultimatum

By Lusekero Mhango

KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-As the battle for three points and supremacy in the TNM Super League is set to resume in April Karonga United and Chitipa United are at risk of being barred from using  the Karonga Stadium as their home ground following concerns over the state of some facilities and the playing surface at the stadium.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) made the stern warning on Tuesday following an inspection of the venue that the two clubs have proposed will be their home in the fourth coming season.

Speaking in an interview after the inspection FAM’s Transfer and Marching System and club licencing Manager Caspar Jangale, said from the look of things the ground appears only 60% ready to host the upcoming league matches.

He said, as the stadium will not only be used by Karonga united but Chitipa too, there is a lot of areas that need working on especially the playing turf and the boundary fence.

“If you look at the entry and exit points there is need to cover them and the state of the pitch as it is now will not handle 30 league matches as it is in a bad condition and we highlighted this last year in our last inspection but it seems the works are still outstanding thus we have warned and given the stadium management 20 days to work on the issues we have highlighted because they are very important,”  a frustrated Jangale chirped.

According to Jangale, if the areas will not be worked upon in the set deadline then the karonga stadium will not be certified to host matches this season.

“Its about time we started not approving these stadiums or facilities because we are here to ensure that our football is developing and we are doing that through club licencing where there’s rules and regulations and we believe these rules must be followed by the necessary authorities and in this case the stadium managers,” he articulated.

Reacting to FAM’s warning Karonga stadium development committee chairperson Kosum Munthali, said the committee is appreciative to FAM for their honesty and their desire to see the stadium in good condition and ready to host matches.

Munthali said, along with the committee they will push hard with the district council to fix the minor issues that FAM has asked in the required time frame.

The 5000 capacity stadium was officially  opened in January 2018 and last season it hosted a number of notable matches including among others Karonga united’s clashes with Nyasa Big Bullets and BeForward Wanderers respectively and as well the Mzuzu derby involving Mzuni Fc and Moyale Barracks.

MAU optimistic despite Malawi’s poor performance

Mangochi, February 27, 2019: The Malawi Aquatic Union (MAU) says the Malawi National Swimming team has the potential to win more medals despite the team’s poor performance at the 2019 CANA Zone IV Competition held in Namibia recently.

Malawi returned home on Friday with eight medals: 1 gold, 5 silver, and 2 bronze medals, sinking down to the bottom position of 12 out of 12 countries that got medals from the 14 countries that participated in the competition.

South Africa emerged top on medal count, amassing 82 medals comprising 36 gold medals, 25 silver medals, and 21 bronze medals, followed by Namibia with 28 gold medals, 31 silver medals, and 29 bronze medals, totaling 88 medals.

Mauritius came third with 15 gold medals, 16 silver medals, and 18 bronze medals, a total of 49 medals, while Zimbabwe came on fourth position with 13 gold medals, 11 silver medals, and 12 bronze metals totaling 36 medals.

On points, Malawi was weighed down to the bottom position of 12 out of 14 countries with an overall of 347 points beating Eswatini and Tanzania who scored 127 and 8 respectively.

Namibia scored the highest with 2,577 points beating South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana who scored 1,993, 1908.50 and 1,501.50 points respectively emerging in positions second, third and fourth in that order.

However, MAU Vice President, Monica Chang’anamuno said on Monday they were not discouraged with the results adding that the Malawi Swimming National Team has the potential to do better.

“The competition ran from 16th to 20th February. We have done well though the medals were won by one swimmer, Filipe Gomes, but the rest still managed to beat their personal best times which is a great improvement and good for Malawi,” Chang’anamuno told Mana.

“Swimming has a bright future in Malawi but we need more stakeholders to support the sport. We have potential swimmers who just need support to train more,” she added.

In July 2018 after a two-week swimming camp in Mangochi, the MAU Vice President also called upon government and stakeholders to invest in the sport, saying as a nation, Malawi did not have public swimming pools which could be used for training.

The Malawian team that participated in the CANA (African Swimming Competition) Zone 4 in Namibia this year comprised 11 swimmers, four males and seven females.

The males were Filipe Gomes who, according to Chang’anamuno, trains in Portugal; Asher Banda from Bishop Mackenzie High School; Akunzike Kunsinda from St. Andrews High School and Mohammed Ali Moosa from ABC Christian Academy.

The female swimmers were Ammara Pinto who trains in Thailand; Tayamika Chang’anamuno from ABC Christian Academy; Jessica Makwenda from Kamuzu Academy; Tracy Chizonda learning in Uganda and Jennifer Kayuni from ABC Christian Academy.

The other two were Olivia Losacco from Bishop Mackenzie High School and Zoe Rebello from Mt. Sinai High School.

According to Chang’anamuno, this was the first time for Malawi to send a team of all Malawian passport holders with locals in majority.

Other competing countries included Seychelles, Angola, Kenya, Zambia, Mozambique and Uganda.
