Malawi, Morocco in barren draw; 2019 AFCON qualifiers

By Lusekero Mhango

Malawi National Team, the Flames dead rubber clash against Morocco ended in a dour stalemate with the  afternoon’s only entertainment arriving at the close of the match from the fans’ missiles in remonstrant to the Referees’ questionable decisions against the hosts.

In a match that had no impact on Group  B qualification permutations as Morocco had already qualified before kick off, the eliminated hosts will be pleased to have wound up their home campaign without either conceding or defeat beating Comoros by a goal and forcing goal-less draws against heavy weights Cameroon and Morocco.

But the result completed a miserable week of international football as Malawi neither scored nor won in both junior and senior team assignments against Zambia and Morocco respectively.

The hosts were sloppy and vulnerable from the start allowing the visitors to boss play especially from the wide areas where Idrissah Oussama (10) and  and Hadraf Zakaria (7) orchestrated offensive forays tormenting Stanley Sanudi and Gome Chirwa who were forced to stay back and keep taps rather than advance.

But their tantalizing  crosses whipped into the box went begging and Flames burst into life easing into the game  after a quarter of an hour’s play with Phiri Junior registering the first effort on target.

Gaba then broke loose  darting inside on the left but no marauding forward timely arrived in the box to connect home.

Otherwise, the visitors showed  far more attacking initiative through  the constant threat  posed by Oussama and Zakaria.

Evergreen goalie Ernest Kakhobwe stayed alert with close range saves and aerial agility to keep the Flames in the game even as Centre back  Cholopi lost his bearings nearly gifting the  Atlas Lions the lead moments before the break.

A rain soaked pitch slowed the pace  and further lowered the quality of the match most of the closing half. Morocco  were however first on the ball constantly robbing possession from the Malawians  who dwelt on the ball a second too long.

Aided by a manifestly biased Angolan officiating crew led by Referee Helder Carvalho who blew against the hosts for every minor infraction, our rhythm  and  tempo were all but frustrated and nipped as the visitors pressed for the opener.

Flames were up against 14 men contrary to FIFA Rules and Regulations.Small wonder the local fans vented their fury through missiles.

If truth be told, the referees indiscretions cannot mask the fact that in their own right the Flames were not only shapeless  but mastered only a solitary  and speculative effort from John Banda with barely 10 minutes left on the clock

.Chester ran at his markers on a few occasions but he was kept in check whilst Chikotis physical presence somewhat punctured the Moroccans stroll at the heart of the park.

Substitutes Binwell Katinji and Micium Mhone respectively in place of Khuda Muyaba  and Gabadinho remained pedestrian failing to inject the requisite verve as well as penetration  though Mhone showed some flashes of individual brilliance.

In the end  there was no winner as both keepers kept a clean sheets, but it was the home fans grumbling the loudest.

Flames coach drops captain Banda, bemoans the standard of football not par with his standards

RVG chilling with Flames’ players

The Newly appointed Flames coach Ronny van Geneugden, wants to bring a different brand of Football to the Malawi team, as a result he has dropped captain Davie Banda from his first squad.

Van Geneugden, who was appointed in April, is preparing for a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Comoros on 10 June.

Geneugden (RVG) recently attacked the country’s football style, comparing it to tennis. He complained that players make too many long balls, similar to lobbying a backhand. RVG made this comparison after he watched the game between Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers, in the Airtel Top 8 Cup quarterfinal a few weeks ago at Mulanje Park. The Belgian Malawi national team coach, is on a mission of inspecting the country’s football clubs through the Super League and cup games.

Too much on the plate? Expatriate coach Ronny van Geneugden to head all national teams

Ronny Van Geneugden: new Flames coach

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)- The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Walter Nyamilandu, on Monday told the nation that the newly recruited expatriate coach Ronny van Geneugden, will be the head of all national teams, in a bid to sustain style, discipline, and method of training.

FAM’s clarification comes barely a few days after the expatriate coach Ronny was introduced to the public on Saturday, with a two-year contract for the Flames glooming.

The association president Nyamilandu said Ronny will head all junior national teams, not necessarily to train the youth side, but to supervise and mentor the coaches.

Nyamilandu added that the association wants the coach’s philosophy to flourish from senior team to youth sides for consistency.

Nyamilandu therefore downplays said this would avoid duplication of efforts in involving the expatriate coach on development aspects of football and arguing that the latter will bring in specialized technical services that will be imparted to the local coaches.

“His developmental space actually compliments the role of the Technical Director (TD). Development is not a one man’s job and the TD needs support,” the FAM president said.

“We can’t afford the luxury of the coach being idle, when he can effectively contribute towards football development whenever he isn’t not involved with the Flames. We have to make the most of his time, and benefit from his vast knowledge and experience,” Nyamilandu further justified.

On his part, van Geneugden expressed gratitude for the role given, and said he was ready and willing to be involved with the junior teams as well since his target is to create a style of play not only for the senior teams but the junior teams that Malawi can be identified with.

But other soccer commentators faulted the association’s decision to engage the coach for the junior teams, arguing that it is too much and practically impossible for Ronny to head all teams, as the Flames have a crammed schedule for Africa Cup of Nations and Championship of African Nation  (CHAN) qualifiers in 2019 and 2018 respectively.

Coach van Geneugden, will be supported by two assistant coaches, Gerald Phiri and Deklerk Msakakuona, whose first assignment is the preparations for the 2018 CHAN qualifier against Madagascar, on April 22, 2017.

Prophet Bushiri ready to bankroll Flames’ AFCON Tournament; asks FAM to submit budget

Flames: fails to participate in two continental tournaments due to lack of funding

BLANTURE-(MaraviPost) – South Africa-Malawian based Prophet Shepherd Bushiri of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG), announced this week he is ready to bail out the Malawi nation football team, the Flames. The firebrand prophet that is a household name in malawi and South African said he will release funds for the flag carrier to participate in the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Prophet Bushiri’s offer comes barely a week after Football Association of Malawi (Fam) dropped the bombshell when it announced that it will withdraw theFlames participation in both the 2019 AFCON and the 2018 Champion of African Nations (CHAN) due to lack of funds.

The football governing body further said it suspending the recruitment of the national team’s couch until such a time that government has adequate resources to fund the recruitment.

To participate in the two competitions, FAM needs to spend MK200 million and earn some money from gate collections and broadcasting rights. The association has already exhausted its MK39 million funding for 2016/2017 financial year.

In an exclusive interview with The Maravi Post on Saturday, Prophet Bushiri’s Communications Officer Ephraim Nyondo, said the offer rest in the hands of FAM to approach him using appropriate procedures.

Nyondo therefore asked the FAM to present its budget which will be scrutinized by the Prophet’s financial managers.

“It has been always been (Prophet Bushiri’s) wish to support the Flames saying the team carries Malawi’s Flag and is a continental showpiece,” said Nyondo.

FAMPresident Walter Nyamilandu, confirmed Bushiri’s offer with grateful appreciation. He said the association will consult on the matter with the necessary authorities before taking the package.

The development has excited Flames captain Limbikani Mzava who described the offer as a timely gesture. He urged the authorities to grab the opportunity without delay.

In 2016, Prophet Bushiri also supported the Flames with a MK44 million donations for the national team to meet the costs of 2017 AFCON back-to-back qualifiers against Guinea’s Sylli Nationale.
