Chakwera calls for peaceful coexistence ahead of September 16 elections

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera has advised Malawians to foster peace and tolerance as the country draws closer to September 16th general elections.

Speaking during a state of the nation address on Monday evening, President Chakwera appealed to Malawians to put the needs of the nation above partisan interests by refraining from political violence.

He explained that peaceful co-existance and respectful dialogue is key to a free and fair election process.

The Malawi leader added that everyone has the right to campaign in every part of the country and that no Malawian should be barred from attending any political rally of their choice.

‘‘I am urging my fellow political leaders to advance the needs of the nation above our political interests, by refraining from violence. We are all one family. Let us not kill each other because of politics,” he said.

Chakwera therefore advised the voters to keep their registration certificates safely to vote for candidates of their choice.

“Even if you lost your voter registration certificate, on the voting day go to a centre where you got registered and you will be assisted to vote,” said Chakwera.
