LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration has taken significant steps to support persons with albinism in Malawi.
One notable initiative is the provision of a plot for the construction of a sunscreen production factory, which aims to promote economic empowerment and self-sufficiency among individuals with albinism.
This move is particularly noteworthy given the historical context of persons with albinism facing persecution and violence in Malawi.

Under previous administrations, specially during the DPP government they were often subjected to brutal attacks and killings, highlighting the need for urgent action to protect their rights and dignity, that’s why Chakwera thought it wise to intervene.
In contrast, President Chakwera’s government has demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting the welfare of persons with albinism.
The administration has built 67 houses through the ministry of Lands, under Deus Gumba Banda across the country, providing safe and secure living conditions for individuals with albinism.
Furthermore, several persons with albinism have been employed in government institutions, showcasing Chakwera’s administration efforts to promote inclusivity and diversity, something that was not effected with the past administration.
Overstone Kondowe, a person with albinism, and a Member of Parliament (MP) for Nkhotakota Liwaladzi Constituency, is a testament to President Chakwera’s dedication to empowering marginalized groups.
Kondowe’s appointment serves as an inspiration to others with albinism, demonstrating that they too can participate fully in the country’s development.
By providing land for the sunscreen factory, President Chakwera is creating opportunities for economic growth and self-reliance among persons with albinism.
This initiative has the potential to improve the lives of individuals with albinism and contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society.
The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) administration, under President Chakwera’s leadership, has shown a genuine commitment to protecting and promoting the rights of persons with albinism.
Their efforts serve as a model for other governments and organizations working to address the challenges faced by marginalized communities.
