MANGOCHI-(MANA)-President Lazarus Chakwera has emphasized the importance of investing in infrastructure to drive economic growth and development.

He said this Monday when he officially opened the newly constructed Monkey Bay- Cape Maclear Road in Mangochi.

Chakwera noted that the upgrading of the road has marked a significant milestone in the district’s infrastructure development.

He said the upgrading of the Monkey Bay-Cape Maclear Road was a testament to his administration’s commitment to developing Mangochi District and the entire country.

Chakwera acknowledged the scenic beauty of the area, which was home to Lake Malawi and expressed confidence that the improved road would attract more tourists to the district.

“What has happened here is a clear example that we can ably construct proper and durable roads in the country,” he said.

The President added that, “Cape Maclear is a very beautiful place which attracts most tourists across the globe and if we can continue developing such places, we will place the nation to its desired place.”

Malawi Leader assured Malawians of his administration support to alleviate hunger.

“This year in a row, the whole African region has been affected by bad weather and Malawi has not been spared,” he noted.

Chakwera explained that, “Before coming here, I was at Namwera and I witnessed the human suffering, people are literally starving. However, let me assure Malawians that my government is doing all it can to assist everyone.”

He appealed to citizens to register with the National Registration Bureau this coming September for them to exercise their rights to vote during the forthcoming general elections.

Second Deputy Secretary General for Malawi Congress Party, Gerald Kazembe welcomed the development, expressing his gratitude to the President and his administration for delivering on their promises.

“For the past decades, we have never witnessed this strong road and as residents of Mangochi we are very thankful,” he said.

The newly six kilometre tarmac road started in 2021 and has been constructed by CAS/Maoni joint venture contractors.

The rehabilitated road, which spans several kilometres, is expected to boost economic activities, improve access to essential services and enhance the overall quality of life for residents and tourists, alike.

The rehabilitation of the road has been a long-awaited project for tourists who have had to endure poor road conditions for many years.

Before officially opening the road, President Chakwera toured Agri-Vest Macadamia Nuts Farm Limited in the area of Senior Chief Bwananyambi and inspected the construction of the Mangochi Finance and District Council Chamber facilities.
