College students petition Malawi Govt to re-open schools

By Francisco Mwanza

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-College students residing in Mzuzu and surrounding districts petitioned District Education manager in Mzuzu pushing for the re-opening of Schools in the country amid Covid-19 pandemic scare.

The Northern Region Education division manager Mzondi Moyo confirmed having received the petition on Friday, June 5, 2020.

However, he promised the concerned student to deliver the petition to the responsible ministry by the end of business the same day.

But Moyo asked the students to carefully read the press statement on the issue by the ministry for their input.

“l promise to forward the petition to the ministry but l have also asked the students to go through the press release by the ministry of education which has just created a task force working on the issue of re-opening of schools in the country.,”said the education manager Moyo.

The deputy chair for the School re-opening Movement (SRM) northern region chapter, Gift Banda said that its high time the government should reconsider this issue seriously.

“We are not undermining majors taken by the goverment to prevent the further spread of the virus, but looking at the balance itself between the rate at which the corona virus is spreading and the need for school, one can easily conclude that it is falling where education lies.

We have seen bars opening, political rallies happening and now parliament deliberations taking place but why not schools,”lamented Banda.

Adding that if the schools do not open by next week they will react by organising a big match which will envolve all the districts in the north.

The special task force and other stakeholders has asked government to reconsider re-opening of schools on July 13, 2020.

According to the press release by the Malawi government, by Friday, June 5 2020, the country has registered 409 cases with 4 deaths.
