#Cyclone Freddy response: Old Mutual donates to Zomba survivors

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-A leading Financial Services Provider, Old Mutual (Malawi) Limited through Red Cross Society of Malawi (RCSM), has made a generous donation to support victims of Cyclone Freddy at Pilimiti Boys And Girls Primary School camps in Zomba district.

The tropical cyclone hit Malawi particularly the southern region earlier in March, causing widespread destruction and displacement of communities.

Zomba district is one of the worst affected with many families losing their homes and livelihoods.

In response to the disaster, Old Mutual donated MK60 million through RCSM to support relief efforts for the affected communities in Nsanje, Mulanje, Phalombe, and Zomba districts. Zomba is the first district to benefit from the donation from Old Mutual through MRSM.

Among other things, the company is providing both food and non-food items including maize flour, corned soya bean, cooking oil, salt, soya pieces, blankets, and clothing.

Speaking at the  handover of the donation Old Mutual Malawi’s Group Chief Finance Officer, Vera Zulu said the company is concerned with the magnitude of devastation hence coming forth to support the affected communities and families.

“Our hearts go out to the people of Zomba and all who have been affected by Cyclone Freddy. As a responsible business, we understand the immense challenges they are facing and we want to do our part to help them through this difficult time.” She said

On her part, Prisca Chisala, MRCS director of programs expressed gratitude to Old Mutual for the support saying with the company’s support they have managed to reach over 1,300 people.

“We are grateful to Old Mutual Malawi for their support during this challenging time. The donation will help us provide much-needed relief to the affected communities and ensure that they have access to basic necessities,” she said.

Old Mutual Malawi’s donation is part of the company’s wider commitment to corporate social responsibility and community development in Malawi.

The company has been involved in various initiatives to support education, healthcare, and economic empowerment in the country.
