Doctors warn Malawians on the use of traditional herbs against Covid-19

Mzuzu-(MaraviPost)—Medical  doctors in the country have warned people against the use of traditional herbs as a cure to the novel Corona virus.

President of the Society of Medical Doctors (SMD) in Malawi, Dr Victor Mithi, has said there is little scientific backing as to whether or not the herbal concoctions are a remedy to the pandemic.

“Right now we have little  backing from the scientific point of view as whether those things work or not. We have seen from the observation point of view that others are claiming that they have been helped through those means, but we don’t have proper scientific backing to say this is what has helped people and this is what is not helping people,” explained Mithi.

While echoing Mithi’s sentiments, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr Charles Mwansambo, bemoaned the tendency of using traditional concoctions as a home remedy to Covid-19 since there is not yet any scientific evidence to back up the use.

Mwansambo, however, urged Malawians to resort to consumption of healthy food as well as physical exercises.

In August last year, ministry of health in the country introduced guidelines at community level for those with mild and asymptotic signs for Covid-19 to follow.

On Thursday this week, Malawi registered the highest number of new Covid-19 cases at 1,198 with about 24 new deaths within 24 hours.
