A dramatic scene unfolded in Mponela, Dowa district, on Tuesday afternoon when a police officer was stabbed by a suspect who was being arrested.

According to Police Public Relations Officer Macpatson Msadala, the incident occurred at a store in Mponela, where the suspect, 20-year-old Chipiliro Banda, was apprehended.

Banda had been on the run after jumping bail on theft charges, for which he was arrested in February this year.

He was spotted selling fish at a market, where police officers attempted to arrest him.

However, Banda resisted arrest and pulled out an okapi knife, stabbing Police Officer Stanley Nkhoma in the back.

Another police officer was also wounded in the scuffle.

Both officers were rushed to Dowa hospital, where they are receiving treatment.

The condition of Officer Nkhoma is reported to be critical, and the police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

Sergeant Msadala condemned the attack on the police officers, stating that it was unacceptable for suspects to resort to violence against law enforcement. “We will not tolerate such behavior, and we will do everything in our power to ensure that justice is served,” he said.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of police officers in Malawi, who often face violent resistance from suspects.

The police have called for greater support and cooperation from the public in their efforts to maintain law and order.

In recent months, there have been several incidents of violence against police officers in Malawi.

In February, a police officer was seriously injured in a scuffle with a suspect in Mzuzu.

The incident highlighted the need for greater investment in police training and equipment to ensure that officers are better equipped to handle violent situations.

The attack on Officer Nkhoma has also raised questions about the effectiveness of the bail system in Malawi.

Banda was granted bail on theft charges, but he jumped bail and was only apprehended after a lengthy search.

The incident has sparked calls for greater scrutiny of the bail system to ensure that suspects who pose a risk to public safety are not released back into the community.

As the investigation into the attack on Officer Nkhoma continues, the police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, and there is widespread condemnation of the violence against the police officers.

In a statement, the Malawi Police Service said that it would do everything in its power to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible for the attack are brought to book.

The incident has highlighted the need for greater cooperation between the police and the public in maintaining law and order in Malawi.

As the country grapples with the implications of this incident, there is a growing recognition of the need for greater investment in police training and equipment.

The safety of police officers is a critical concern, and it is essential that they are equipped with the necessary skills and resources to handle violent situations.

The attack on Officer Nkhoma is a sobering reminder of the risks that police officers face every day.

As the investigation continues, there is a growing sense of outrage and condemnation of the violence against the police officers.

The incident has sparked a national conversation about the need for greater support and cooperation for the police in their efforts to maintain law and order in Malawi.
