Mangochi, January 22, 2019. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Deputy National Director of Women, Victoria Kingstone has downplayed the rumours making rounds that the party would not field candidates in Mangochi.

Kingstone who is also an aspiring candidate for Mangochi Central parliamentary seat said this during a rally she held on Sunday at St. Augustine 3 Primary School ground to drum up support for the party and herself ahead of the May 21 Tripartite Elections.

“It is not true that the DPP will not field a candidate in Mangochi,” she pointed out adding that, “We have not been informed about any alliance with any other party, so we have to tighten up our belts ahead of the elections so that our party wins and win with a landslide.”

Kingstone assured her supporters that she would be on the ballot paper to represent Mangochi Central come May 21 and that she would make it to the National Assembly.

The deputy national director of women described DPP as a strong party in Mangochi, expressing optimism that the party would retain leadership of government owing to the infrastructural developments the DPP-led government has initiated in the district and beyond.

Kingstone distanced herself from the rumours that she had joined the United Transformation Movement (UTM).

“DPP is in my blood and I will die a DPP member,” she confirmed adding that, “I cannot defect to any party and those people spreading the false news just want to tarnish my image.”

Kingstone could not disclose the date when the DPP would hold primaries in the district saying: ‘It is the prerogative of the party’s spokesperson’ to disclose such exclusive information.

Kingstone’s declaration on DPP’s stand in the district in the forthcoming elections follows unconfirmed reports which circulated on the social media concerning a possible coalition between the ruling DPP and United Democratic Front (UDF) ahead of the general elections.

The reports purported that United Democratic Front (UDF) President, Atupele Muluzi had set a condition that if the two parties were to go into a coalition, DPP should not field candidates in Mangochi, Machinga and Balaka.
