The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) has launched the Young Feminists Network in Malawi, a platform designed to empower young women to advocate for their rights and those of girls and women.

The network aims to provide a space for young women to share their experiences, ideas, and perspectives on issues affecting them and to develop leadership skills.

According to Letty Chiwara, Country Director of UN Women in Malawi, the network is a critical step towards promoting gender equality and empowering young women in the country. “We believe that young women have a critical role to play in shaping the future of our country and promoting the rights of girls and women,” Chiwara said.

The Young Feminists Network is expected to operate as the voice of the voiceless, inspiring young people both within and outside Malawi to take action in promoting gender equality.

The network will provide a platform for young women to network, share ideas, and develop leadership skills, as well as engage with policymakers and other stakeholders to influence policies and programs that affect them.

Bridget Oscar Phiri, a representative of the young women, welcomed the initiative, saying that Malawi needs a body that allows young and energetic women to lead in advocating for the rights of girls and women.

Phiri highlighted the importance of addressing issues such as gender-based violence, which affects many girls and women in the country.

The network’s establishment comes at a time when Malawi is making efforts to address gender inequality and promote women’s empowerment.

The country’s constitution guarantees equal rights for men and women, but in practice, women and girls continue to face significant challenges, including gender-based violence, early marriage, and limited access to education and economic opportunities.

The Young Feminists Network is expected to play a critical role in addressing these challenges and promoting gender equality in Malawi.

By providing a platform for young women to share their experiences and ideas, the network will help to amplify the voices of young women and promote their participation in decision-making processes.
