EU threatens withdrawing from Malawi Police’s training support over protestors attacks

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The European Union (EU) has threatened to withdraw support for police training in Malawi following violent attacks on protestors in Lilongwe on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

EU Ambassador to Malawi, Rune Skinnebach, condemned the incident, which occurred in full view of Malawi Police Service (MPS) and Malawi Defence Force (MDF) personnel who did not intervene.

“I was shocked, disappointed and disgusted by yesterday’s events,” he told Zodiak Online.

“We have been giving support to police training but that is something we will have to reconsider if the police does not make good use of the training, if they seemingly don’t intend to play their role and if their mandate is undermined by instructions from somewhere else,” he said.

Skinnebach added that the EU expects a thorough investigation to identify and hold accountable those behind the attacks.

Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on President Lazarus Chakwera to fire Homeland Security Minister Ezekiel Ching’oma, Inspector General of Police (IG) Merlyne Yolamu and Malawi Defence Force (MDF) General Valentino Phiri for siding with thugs to attack peaceful demonstrations.
