FAM overhauls membership structure to enhance governance

1 Min Read

SALIMA-(MaraviPost)-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has taken a significant step towards enhancing governance and professionalism in Malawian football.

The FAM Congress has voted to revoke the membership of three key associations: the National Football Youth Association, National Football Coaches Association, and National Referees Association.

This decision is part of a broader effort to streamline governance and eliminate duplication of roles within Malawi’s football structures.

Speaking at Anual General Meeting in Salima on Saturday,FAM President Fleetwood Haiya, says the move aims to reduce political interference, which has previously hindered the performance of these bodies.

The affected associations will continue to function as technical and professional partners of FAM, reporting directly to the FAM executive through relevant sub-committees.

This change will allow FAM to support their operations more efficiently, especially in critical areas like youth development, coaching, and refereeing.

Haiya emphasized that the decision is not about removing the associations from football but aligning them to operate more effectively outside FAM’s political structure.

The restructuring is part of FAM’s efforts to align with FIFA’s governance guidelines. By adopting best practices and improving governance, FAM aims to promote the growth and development of football in Malawi.

With the new changes, FAM now has seven member associations, including the Super League of Malawi (SULOM), Women’s Football Association, Beach Soccer Association, and the four Regional Football Associations.

This streamlined structure is expected to facilitate more effective decision-making and support for the development of football in Malawi.
