Catherine Gotani Hara: A disappointing Speaker of Parliament

4 Min Read

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Catherine Gotani Hara’s tenure as Speaker of Parliament has been marked by a series of troubling decisions and actions that have raised serious questions about her ability to fulfill the responsibilities of her role.

Rather than acting as an impartial leader of the legislative body, she has consistently demonstrated a bias towards the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), undermining the very principles of democracy and parliamentary integrity. Her performance has not only disappointed many but has also set a concerning precedent for future women leaders in similar positions

From the outset, it was clear that Hara’s allegiance lay with the MCP rather than the Parliament as a whole. This partisanship has manifested in her handling of parliamentary sessions, where she has repeatedly favored her fellow party members while suppressing the voices of opposition MPs. Such behavior is not only unbecoming of a Speaker but also detrimental to the democratic process.

A Speaker is expected to be a neutral arbiter, ensuring that all voices are heard and respected, regardless of party affiliation. Hara’s actions, however, have consistently indicated that she views her role as one of protecting the interests of the MCP rather than upholding the integrity of the Parliament.

One of the most glaring examples of her bias has been her frequent suspensions of opposition MPs during parliamentary sessions.

Hara has shown a troubling tendency to silence dissent, often targeting those who dare to challenge the status quo or question the actions of the government. This selective enforcement of parliamentary rules has created an environment of fear and intimidation, where opposition members are left feeling marginalized and powerless.

In stark contrast, her fellow MCP MPs have been allowed to operate with impunity, even when they have engaged in behavior that warrants disciplinary action. This blatant double standard not only undermines the credibility of the Parliament but also erodes public trust in the institution as a whole.

Hara’s failure to inspire women in leadership roles is another significant aspect of her poor performance. As a female Speaker, she had the opportunity to serve as a role model for women across Malawi, demonstrating that women can hold positions of power and influence.

Instead, her actions have sent a message that women in leadership are not immune to the same partisan politics that have plagued the male-dominated political landscape. By failing to stand up for the principles of fairness and equality, Hara has squandered a vital opportunity to empower other women and inspire the next generation of female leaders.

Moreover, her leadership style has been characterized by a lack of transparency and accountability. Decisions made under her watch often appear arbitrary and capricious, leaving both MPs and the public in the dark about the rationale behind her actions.

This opacity has contributed to a growing sense of disillusionment among citizens who expect their leaders to operate with integrity and openness. In a time when trust in political institutions is at an all-time low, Hara’s failure to communicate effectively and transparently has only exacerbated the problem.

Hara’s performance as Speaker has also been marred by a lack of engagement with the broader issues facing Malawi.

Instead of using her platform to address pressing concerns such as poverty, education, and healthcare, she has focused on maintaining party loyalty and suppressing dissent. This narrow focus not only neglects the needs of the Malawian people but also reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of the role of a Speaker.

A Speaker should be a champion for the people, advocating for policies and initiatives that benefit the entire nation, rather than merely serving the interests of a single political party.

In terms of her effectiveness as a leader, Hara’s score would be a dismal 2 out of 20. This score reflects her inability to rise above partisanship, her failure to inspire and empower women, and her lack of transparency and accountability.

Her actions have not only harmed the reputation of the Parliament but have also contributed to a growing sense of disillusionment among the electorate. As a result, it is difficult to see how she can continue to serve in a role that requires a commitment to fairness, integrity, and the public good.

Catherine Gotani Hara’s performance as Speaker of Parliament has been nothing short of disappointing. Her partisanship, lack of transparency, and failure to inspire women in leadership roles have all contributed to a troubling legacy that will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

As Malawi continues to grapple with the challenges of governance and democracy, it is imperative that future leaders learn from Hara’s mistakes and strive to uphold the principles of fairness, accountability, and inclusivity.

The hope is that the next Speaker will recognize the importance of serving all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation, and work tirelessly to restore faith in the Parliament as a vital institution of democracy.
