As one way of involving young people in advocating for their Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights, Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM) has drilled 32 youths from Lilongwe and Dedza districts on how they can make use of social media to seek assistance on various challenges they are facing in their respective areas.
Following the training, the youths will be given smart phones which they will be using to send and share experiences pertaining HIV/AIDS and SRHR.
Speaking after a week-long training conducted in Dedza, the District’s FPAM Manager – Taona Tembo said the training was significant, saying the youths have been empowered to advocate for various issues affecting them and address them to responsible persons for assistance.
Mrs. Tembo further said that she is hopeful the development will bring change in as far as Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights among the youths is concerned.
”The training was all about communication and how they can deliver messages through media, especially social media.
There are many youths that are using social media and that is why we planned to provide this training so that they should be using that platform to advocate for various issues of their concern and get assistance.” Mrs. Tembo said.
In her remarks, one of the trainees – Hawa Idana said the workshop has enlightened them on how to deal with various challenges they have been facing in their respective areas regarding Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights.
Hawa said for a long time, young people in the country have been discriminated and excluded on issues of SRHR.
”I have learnt a lot from the training about advocacy. As youths we have been discriminated on various issues but with the training i am going to teach my fellow youths about this so that together we can change the society’s attitude towards us on issues of HIV/AIDS and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights.” Said Hawa.
Communications Officer for the organisation – Henry Nyaka advised the youths to properly utilize the gadgets for their benefits.
Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM) is a local non-governmental organization that provides comprehensive Youth friendly sexual and reproductive health services to young people in the country.
