In the first place I would like to applaud government for its implementation of community colleges. However, the style, system and curriculum is much outdated much as we consider we are in 21st century.
For instance the certificate value can’t make someone secure a good job within or abroad. Carpentry, bricklaying and welding are some of the courses that most simple collages provided.
In this case government was supposed to inject in something more concrete like Boiler making courses that takes welding and fabrication as a subject because we will soon be opening mines.
Introduce in the collages technician courses offered by City and Guilds. Like construction technician, computer technician and much more that Malawian workforce may be exported someday.
In all the districts we have dead PVHO facilities that would be under Community Collages as a practical base instead be used to train mechanics for boats, tractors, vehicles and what have you. Let’s be moving with time, The Kayelekera Mine for instance when constructed all welders came from South Africa. Up to now.
Simply because no Collage in Malawi trains Boilermakers. A lot of money on a lot of jobs done by South Africans. Simple courses for Riggers, Safety and Health, Scaffolding near to be introduced if Malawians are to compete on the world job market.
As this will be in progress, The Government can start sourcing money to open its own mines, run by Malawi Government. Somebody tell me if ordinary people borrow money from World Bank to open Kayelekera Mine, what fail you Professor and us alongside. For your own info, we are fast learning that most of the job during commissioning of the mine was done by Malawians.
If need be, we hire a few expatriate from abroad. In such a way the number for those migrating will drastically drop. Chuma chili mthaka did not mean only maize let’s open government mines and Malawi will never be the same.
Investors are businessmen for your own info. Let’s do it ourselves. Am expecting to be approached by govt. and other stakeholders to contribute on ways of making youths in Malawi including myself to have direction
