DAR ES SALAAM-(MaraviPost)-Tanzanian President John Magufuli over the weekend, sacked about 10, 000 civil servants for having fake education certificates that were used to secure their jobs.
This is one of the drastic and serious responses to the release of the government report into fraudulent qualifications in the public sector.
According to the BBC, the country’s education minister revealed that some civil servants had been using their relatives’ school certificates, while others did not appear on official records at all.
This prompted President Magufuli to act, and has given those on the list until May 15, to resign or face legal action.
The President has even asked newspapers to publish the names of everyone on the government legible civil servants list, to shame those having fake education certificates.
“These people occupied government positions, but had no qualifications. They robbed us just like other common criminals. We have been working hard to create new jobs, while there are people in government who hold fake degrees,” Magufuli fumed.
The Tanzania no-nonsense leader, urged officials to name and shame the offenders.
Reports show that it’s a trend in Tanzania for people to use fake certificates, and that 9,932 people named in the report, account for more than two percent of that country’s estimated 450,000 civil servants.
In 2016, Tanzania police raided a house in Dar es Salaam, and found two individuals with machines, stamps and piles of templates for fake secondary school, birth, and business licence certificates, stacked up in a room.
