BLANTYRE(MaraviPost)–Azam Tigers have booked a place in the semi final of the k28 million Standard Cup after seeing off Kamuzu Barracks on Sunday at the Kamuzu Stadium.
The Tigers scored the goal in the first half and defended it jearously up to the last whistle.
The visitors, led by Harvey Nkacha, Kelvin Hanganda and Dan Ziba were a marvel to watch in the first 20 minutes of the match but to penetrate Tigers’ defence which was led by Bonda Mpinganjira, proved to be difficult.
Playing without their match maker Dave Banda, who is in DRC for peace keeping mission, the soldiers strugled on the midfield, giving Nafe Msasa and Malumbo Gondwe a room to shine.
The Kau-Kau boys, who beat Epac FC in the preliminary round, also enjoyed the services of former Mighty Wanderers’ player Diverson Chilemba who combined well with Peter Kasonga up front.
Tigers’ Technical Director, Robin Alufandika hailed his charges for the win.
“I’m very happy and we are looking forward to the next challenge against Mafco FC. My boys have done a wonderful job and we are optimistic that we can win this cup again,” he said.
His counterpart Kenwood Nkhoma was disapointed with the result.
“I am very disapointed, we were hoping to win this cup but once again, our dreams have been shattered. I thank my boys for not giving up though we did not get the result we were looking for,” he said.
Tigers, the 2009 champions of the cup, will face Mafco FC in the semi finals.
Mafco thumped Airborne Rangers 3-0 to book a place in the semi finals.
