The Malawi government has been forced to deny impending news of a Paul Kagame visit, they are warning against the publication of fake news as it paints a bad picture of the country’s diplomatic reputation.
The warning comes after a fake press statement went viral online alleging that the Rwandan President Paul Kagame would visit the country.
It also alleged that President Lazarus Chakwera and the first lady Monica Chakwera would visit Namibia, Qatar, Germany, and Kenya.
The citizenry has since been advised to verify information
The Government of the Republic of Malawi would like to refute allegations that have been going round the Social Media that His Excellency Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda, is coming to Malawi for a State Visit. The fake press statement also indicates that His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, and Her Excellency the First Lady Madame Monica Chakwera will go on State Visits to Namibia, Qatar, Germany, and Kenya.
Government would like to firmly indicate that the said statement is not true, and that State and Official Visits are handled through diplomatic channels with coordinated preparations and the general public is informed accordingly.
In addition, Government wishes to indicate that information/details of such high-profile visits are exclusively released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Government, therefore, wishes to encourage the general public to verify such information with appropriate authorities and to desist from fabricating and spreading fake news as it sends wrong signals on Malawi’s diplomatic reputation.
