LILONGWE-(MANA)-Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango, says the new Lilongwe river bridge, which is part of the improvement of the main roads in Lilongwe City, is important in boosting economic growth in the country as it has far-reaching benefits.

He made the remarks in Lilongwe on Thursday during the handover and official opening of the new Lilongwe Bridge which is funded by the government of Japan.

“The bridge will improve road conditions, reduce travel time, and enhance safety, ultimately contributing to the country’s socio-economic development,” he said.

Mhango said the completion of the project marks a milestone in the development of Lilongwe and the country at large.

“The M001 road, where the bridge is located, is a critical transport artery, connecting Malawi’s major cities and serving as a key trade route to neighboring countries,” he said.

The Minister thanked the Japanese Government for its support, saying they cherish the relationship between Malawi and Japan and looks forward to continued cooperation.

Ambassador of Japan in Malawi , Yasushi Naito, said the bridge is a pathway to prosperity and human development as it will strengthen connectivity, support trade, and unlock new economic opportunities for citizens and businesses.

Naito said the project has also provided valuable training and skills development for Malawian engineers and technicians.
