The Evangelical Lutheran Development Service (ELDS), the development arm of the Malawi Lutheran Church, on Saturday donated maze seeds, and relief items worth about MK18 million kwacha to people living in the area of traditional authority Kilipula in karonga district.
The donation comes after the heavy flood that claimed lives, displaced families, and destroyed hectares of crops, earlier this year.
The faith-based organisation, which was represented by Watson Mkisi, on behalf of Bishop Joseph Bvumbwe, donated casava, sweet potato, and maze seeds, and 50 kg bags of maze, among others to 1,300 severely affected families.
According to Mkisi, the donation was of $25,000 worth and comes from the Lutheran church of America.
Mkisi said that they assisted the flood victims because they wanted to put farmers back on track to replant and harvest food through irrigation.
One of the beneficiaries Alick Nyirenda thanked the organization for the timely gesture.
“I would like to reasure the Lutheran that the relief items will be put to good use, and that they won’t be found on the market,” he promised.
