
MWANZA-(MaraviPost)-The Mwanza First Grade Magistrate court on Monday resentenced three convicts to nine months in prison with hard labour for escaping prison premises.
Mwanza Police Public Relations Officer Edwin Kaunda confirmed to Maravi Post the re-sentencing of the trio namely Henry Samson 25, Leonard Lameck 23 and Mwandida Kuntola 18 who committed the offense on June 12, 2016.
According to Kaunda, the three convicts were said to be serving different jail terms for various offences which they committed within the district in 2015 at the said prison.
Kaunda said Samson was serving a seven year jail term for the offence of House breaking and Lamarck was serving a four year and 4 months for the offences of Burglary and theft while Mwandida Kuntola was serving a five year jail term for the offence of Burglary.
“The three escaped from Mwanza Prison on June 12 this year around 10:00 hours but were later re-arrested by prison officials after an hour. The trio convicts were later taken to Mwanza First Grade Magistrate Court on June 20 where they pleaded guilty to the charge of Escaping from Lawful custody contrary to section 34 of the penal code.
“Consequently, His worship Ran well Mangazi proceeded giving the trio convicts a jail term which will run consecutively to the sentences they were serving before they escaped,” said Kaunda.
Samson hails from Mchotseni village Traditional Authority (TA) Kanduku in Mwanza and Lameck comes from Magaleta village T.A Mlauli in Neno while Kuntola originates from Kamoto village, TA Dambe in Neno.
