BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says will not be able to conduct the fresh elections on 19th May, 2020.

Addressing the new conference in Blantyre on Friday embattled MEC chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah observed that there’s a need for ample time the commission will require for registration of voters that is expected to occur in 6 phases across the country.

Commenting on the issue of lawyers from outside that MEC has hired, Ansah said MEC has decided to endorse lawyers from outside the country after the suspension of the Attorney General who was supposed to represent MEC.

She said lawyers from within were already taken up in the elections case and some refused to represent MEC due to fear.

When asked on the issue of resignation, Ansah disclosed that she’s willing to leave the office is asked by right authorities but she is not resigning as demanded by the public.

She added that despite having drafted the budget for the fresh elections, government plus other partners that are expected to provide the funds have been engaged.

Ansah said the body is waiting for the certainty of the law which will decide when and how the elections will be conducted.
