Malawi football pauses for elections as global football heats up

Construction of a state of the art sports complex at BAT Ground in Blantyre has officially begun, marking a historic moment for sports development in Malawi.

The project, championed by the Malawi Government through the Malawi National Council of Sports, is expected to transform the Southern Region into a hub for sporting excellence.

The modern facility will include a 17,000 seat football stadium alongside specialized courts for basketball, netball, volleyball and other sporting disciplines.

Speaking to MaraviPost publication, Council Executive Director Henry Kamata revealed that the construction will take approximately three years to complete with a total budget of K30 billion.

He said the project will reduce the shortage of quality facilities and create opportunities for young athletes nationwide.

Kamata also expressed optimism that the stadium would position Malawi as a serious contender to host international tournaments, bringing economic growth and boosting tourism.

Meanwhile, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced the suspension of all elite league and cup matches including the TNM Super League, to allow the country to focus on the upcoming general elections.

Fixtures scheduled between 12th and 18th September 2025 have been affected by this decision which aims to ensure peace and smooth voting processes. The suspension also applies to cup competitions.

The Malawi Under-21 Netball Team will depart for Gibraltar on Monday, 15th September, ahead of the 2025 Netball World Youth Cup. Head coach Noel Mussa has named a strong 12-player squad led by Aisha Gama, Chimwemwe Dzanja, and Stella Matelezi, Shira Nkhoma, Mestina Mtete and Christina Type serving as reserves.

The team will play friendly matches against Jamaica and Singapore before beginning their World Youth Cup campaign on 19th September.

NAM General Secretary Yamikani Kauma expressed gratitude to the Government and Mukuru Company for their support during the team’s preparations.

In another highlight, Malawian FIFA referee Bernadette Kwimbira has officially retired after a stellar 20-year career. Kwimbira, who officiated at global events such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games,said she will now focus on mentoring young referees and fulfilling her role on FAM’s Special Refereeing Committee.

On the international scene, Chelsea have been charged with 74 breaches of the Football Association’s agent regulation rules, involving transactions between 2009 and 2022 under former owner Roman Abramovich.

The violations include high profile deals for players like Eden Hazard, Willian and Samuel Eto’o. Chelsea must respond to the charges by 19th September 2025.

Manchester City have suffered an injury setback as forward Omar Marmoush picked up a knee injury while on international duty with Egypt. His absence comes as a big blow ahead of their highly anticipated clash with Manchester United this weekend.

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged with creating an indecent video of a child and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. His case will be heard in court later this week, sending shockwaves through the refereeing community.

Week four of the English Premier League will deliver exciting fixtures this weekend. Arsenal will face Nottingham Forest while Bournemouth host Brighton.

Crystal Palace will take on Sunderland, Everton will battle Aston Villa, and Fulham will clash with Leeds United. Newcastle United will meet Wolverhampton Wanderers while West Ham United play Tottenham Hotspur.

Brentford will welcome Chelsea, while Sunday’s fixtures will see Burnley face Liverpool before Manchester City take on Manchester United in a derby showdown.

In Spain, La Liga week four action will see Barcelona take on Villarreal, Real Madrid face Girona, Atletico Madrid clash with Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla go head to head with Valencia and Real Sociedad battle Real Betis as the title race begins to take shape.

Germany’s Bundesliga will also be thrilling as Bayern Munich meet RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund play Bayer Leverkusen, Union Berlin take on Eintracht Frankfurt, Stuttgart face Hoffenheim and Borussia Mönchengladbach meet Werder Bremen in exciting contests.

In South Africa’s Premier League, defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns will face Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs will clash with Cape Town City, Supersport United will take on Stellenbosch FC, AmaZulu will meet Golden Arrows and Royal AM will face Richards Bay.
