BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In response to the ongoing fracas in Karonga district over dress code among ladies, the country’s Human rights and social activist, Undule Mwakasungula has condemned the behavior of men who are undressing and harassing ladies over dressing choices.
The incident that has happened days before commemoration of 16 days of activism against gender-based violence for international community including Malawi has painted a bad image and has serious criminal offence under both the domestic and international laws hence Malawians need to be aware of the consequences of such acts.
In a press statement issued on Monday, November 11 and made available to The Maravi Post, Mwakasungula has dejected the behaviour as it poses a threat democracy which is about diversity in opinions, food, language and dressing.
“The excuse that ladies’ dressing style is fueling defilement and rape cases in the district
is ridiculous and fallacious. If anything, rape and defilement is as a result of perverts’
corrupt thinking that equates women and girls to sex objects, ” reads the 6ths paragraph of the statement.
He therefore calls law authorities to subdue the situation and police to intensify security in the area and bring those who practices such to justice.
