Lilongwe, March 28: President Dr. Joyce Banda on Friday challenged women in the country to indulge in small scale businesses if they want to empower themselves.

The President made the plea at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe during a meeting she held with members of civil servants social and economic network (Cissen), saying financial empowerment could start with investment in sustainable small businesses such as village savings loans.

“Let me urge you all that investing in small scale businesses which are sustainable will enhance empowerment amongst yourselves as you will generate income.

“To empower yourselves is possible as long as you are hard-working and know exactly what you want to achieve at the end of the day. Therefore, everybody should start doing businesses that are sustainable and profit making,” President Banda said.

She also urged women to consider themselves as people who could propel this country to prosperity, saying those men that have a tendency of looking down upon women should change their mindset since women could equally do and perform even better than them.

“There are some men who always look down upon women as failures. This oppressive mindset should change and they should know that women can equally do man’s job if not even better the man.

“I urge women to take bold steps and risks if they want to be respected. Sometimes people think we can’t perform simply because we are women. Through self empowerment, nobody will oppress and/or marginalise us,” she explained.
