LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi, as a country, will now be able to do eye surgeries following the purchase of medical equipment amounting to MK300 million that has been assembled at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe.

The Health Parliamentary Committee orchestrated mobilisation of funds that were used to purchase the equipment from a South African company.

Chairperson for the committee, Dr Mathews Ngwale, said he was happy that the dream of the committee has been realised.

He added that sending people abroad for such ailments was a heavy burden on taxes of Malawian citizens.

“It was difficult for ordinary Malawians to have a chance to be sent abroad for eye medical treatment. We tried our best to purchase this kind of equipment so that patients can simply be referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital for treatment,” said Dr Ngwale.

Kamuzu Central Hospital Director, Dr Jonathan Ngoma, said the equipment has come at the right time.

“We have doctors with expertise but they lacked equipment. We used to send patients to India but now they can helped right away here,” he said.

The money for buying the equipment was sourced by the committee in 2021.
