MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Various traditional leaders in the country have rallied behind some Malawians who prayed for the court to nullify parliamentary and local government elections along the presidential polls case.
Since the nullification of presidential polls on February 3, this year, some Malawians calling themselves concerned citizens took to the court to pray to the same to nullify the elections; arguing that it is the same electoral body, Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) that administered the presidential polls which the court found to be marred with widespread, systematic and grave irregularities.
Leader of the concerned citizens, Prince Tchokhotho Malunga Mboma, said in its judgment, the Constitutional Court in Lilongwe argued that the way the elections were conducted was as if Malawians did not go to polls. Hence the need for fresh polls. He also noted that the court trashed the use of the correction fluid, commonly known as Tipp-Ex, as being unconstitutional.
Echoing similar sentiments at a press briefing in Lilongwe on Sunday, traditional leaders, led by Inkosana Ntchawaka Mtenje Jere from Mzimba, said their people are wondering how Mec managed the parliamentary and local government elections and mismanaged the presidential polls. So, they are in support of the court case.
“We have a lot of complaints from our people. They are surprised why the court nullified only the presidential polls. The fact is that all elections were conducted together. And so were all marred,” said Mtenje Jere.
Constitutional Court in Lilongwe nullified the presidential polls only saying, the elections were marred with widespread, systematic and grave irregularities, and ordered a fresh version of the same to be conducted in 150 days.
