Malawian parents urge Govt to protect learners as schools reopen

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Malawian parents and students in the country have called upon government to prioritise protecting students from the current global pandemic of Covid-19 as schools reopen today.

In random spot checks in some districts of Malawi, parents and students seem overjoyed that school life is back but only appeal to authorities; teachers in particular, to orient the students on how to best protect themselves against the disease.

“I’m very happy to be back to school because when we were at home, there was nothing much to do and we felt that when we are at home, our knowledge is limited. So, we are back in school with teachers and all our friends. We are happy that government has put measures that will keep us safe while we are here at school. So, we appreciate that,” said one Vanessa Mwenelupembe, a student in Karonga.

Concurring with the student, Cosmus Msuku, a parent, said: “We are very happy as parents that schools now are being opened. I have a girl child. To us, we believe government has done great. I believe even teachers are also happy because now life will be normal, they will come back to their working conditions.”

Meanwhile, some teachers are appealing to parents and guardians to impress on their wards on the importance of always wearing facemasks as some of them were not so serious about wearing the same during the first phase of school reopening which started on September 7, 2020.

On March 20 this year, government ordered an immediate closure of schools, colleges and universities as a preventive measure against Covid-19, which was detected in Malawi a week later.
