Malawian truck drivers to hold another sit in

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Truck drivers in Malawi vow to hold yet another sit in a bid to push their employers to raise their salaries.

According to a statement signed by the Chairperson of the Professional Drivers Union, Leonard Sitima, the sit will start on 3rd December, 2019.

“Following slow pace and negative responses to our grievances on salaries, welfare and working conditions, we have resolved to have a mass sit in from 3rd December, 2019 until our grievances are addressed in full,” reads the statement in part.

The truck drivers are demanding a minimum monthly pay of up to K300, 000 and better allowances for their local and international trips.

On 22nd of last month, the leadership of the union met the Minister of Transport, Ralph Jooma, after they held a sit for the same demands, and he promised to help the situation.

But two weeks ago, Transporters Association of Malawi, who are the employers of the truck drivers, announced that they cannot afford to pay such salaries; describing them as exorbitant and unrealistic.

Subsequently, the matter has resurfaced and the drivers will down their again. This sit in is more likely to cripple the energy and transportation sectors of the economy.
