Malawi’s Blantyre woman arrested for slapping own child to death

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police in Blantyre are keeping in custody a 24-year-old Mercy Banda for allegedly slapping to death her own 7-year old child.

Blantyre Police Deputy Spokesperson Aubrey Singanyama confirmed of Banda’s arrest on Sunday July 24,2022.

Singanyama said Banda is alleged to have committed the offence on the afternoon of July 21,2022 at Bonongwe area in Blantyre’s Chilobwe township.

He said on the fateful day, Banda slapped her child unconscious as she was angered by the child’s state.

She then later noticed unusual signs on the child who had her eyes protruding and swollen.

The child was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital ( QECH) where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Banda who is currently in police custody at Soche Police is expected to appear before court to answer a charge of Murder which is contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code.

She hails from Khaphiri Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Khongoni in Lilongwe district.
