Fracas between police and Chitipa residents over MRA

CHITIPA-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police and residents of Chitipa have this morning been in a running battle as the latter want Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) officers working at Mbilima Border post to vacate the area for the failure of the government to provide the citizens with better social amenities.

Last week, the residents issued a one week ultimatum that the MRA officers should remove their office from the border district, else they would face unspecified consequences.

This morning, the angry citizens gathered at the MRA border office and started to ask the officers they found there to vacate the same. As they were in the course of their action, Police were alerted and they immediately ran to the scene where they used teargas to disperse the angry mob.

It is at this point that a running battle ensued between the Police and the citizens. One journalist who was taking pictures at the scene was manhandled by the mob as he was mistaken for a Police officer.

Among other demands people in the district are making, is a tarmacked road from Chitipa Central Business District (CBD) to Mbilima Border post.
