#Malawi’s Cyclone Freddy impact: Death toll at 51

Heavy rainfall due to Cyclone Freddy in Blantyre

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-About 51 people are reportedly died as of Monday, March 13, 2023 in Blantyre and sarounding areas due to impact of Tropical Cyclone Freddy that has hit hard some parts of Malawi’s Southern Region.

According to Blantyre Police Station the deceased, 10 are children under the age of 12 years while 41 are adults.

“Reference to Tropical Cyclone Freddy being experienced in Blantyre and surrounding areas, death toll has now reached 51 people. Among the deceased, 10 are children under the age of 12 years while 41 are adults.

“Chilobwe has recorded the highest number of victims at 36 people. Death toll is expected to rise as the storm is still on- going. Areas affected include Chilobwe, Ndirande, Manase, Chileka, Machinjiri, Chigumula,” reads police statement.

Apart from deaths, the Cyclone has also caused injuries, extensive damage to dwelling houses, damage on road infrustucture.

Meanwhile, Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) Charles Kalemba has assured the nation of excavation process on affected families.
