Malawi’s pool gladiator Grievin ‘Ginte’ Stanford has begun his title hunt on an impressive note at the Queens International Singles Pool Championship in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Stanford, who is being managed and sponsored by Rodrick Mindress, thrashed former African champion Hillary Makamuri of Zimbabwe 9-3 in his opening match.

Mindress, who accompanied Stanford to the tournament, expressed relief and confidence in the Malawian player’s chances of doing well in the competition. “It is quite a big relief to see him beating one of the best players in the continent,” Mindress said, adding that,”We are confident that he will do well in this competition.”

The Queens International Singles Pool Championship has attracted 94 top players from eight countries, including Malawi, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Lesotho, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The tournament, which started on Friday, will run for four days, and the eventual champion will receive a prize of $3500, equivalent to about K6 million.

Stanford’s impressive performance is a testament to his skills and dedication to the sport.

Last year, he made a name for himself by winning the Billards Cafe Pool Singles Tournament in Zambia, where he defied the odds to beat favorite Ssejemba Ibra of Uganda 9-7 in the final. The tournament featured 64 contestants from Southern African countries, including Zambia, Uganda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

Stanford’s victory in Zambia was a significant achievement, and he is now looking to replicate that success at the Queens International Singles Pool Championship.
