Blantyre, Malawi, April 22 (Maravipost) _ Heavy flooding have swept to death a four-year-old girl while destroying several houses and crop fields in the northern border district of Karonga.
Karonga District Council Director of Planning Geoffrey Mkandawire said the flooding follows heavy rains that have been falling in the district since the weekend.
“The girl was swept off by the fast-running water but she was unfortunately rescued already dead,” he said.
Mkandawire said two rivers in the district, bordering Tanzania, broke their banks thereby flooding several villages.
“Hundreds of villagers have taken refugee in schools and churches,” he said.
He said the district council was yet to assess the extent of the damage since the floods have also destroyed several roads making the flooded areas incommunicado.
Floods have also devastated the central parts of neighbouring Tanzania.
Unlike during the past season, on the national level floods this season have not affected the country significantly. The flood-prone southern Lower Shire Valley has not reported any serious flooding incident.-maravipost
