WINDHOEK-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s young athletes are making waves in regional competitions with notable performances in football and volleyball.
The Young Flames, Malawi’s youth football team, has qualified for the semifinals of their tournament after a convincing 2-0 victory over Namibia.
Mithi scored in the 80th minute while Clifford sealed the win with a goal in the 90th+5 minute.
The team finished top of Group A with 7 points, following earlier wins against Zimbabwe (2-1) and a 1-1 draw against Angola.
Head coach Milias Pofera attributed the win to the team’s thorough preparation, saying, “We prepared well, and that’s the main reason we won the match, despite Namibia having more support from their fans.”
In other news, the Malawi Under-20 Women’s Indoor Volleyball Team made a remarkable comeback to defeat Lesotho 3-2 at the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games in Windhoek, Namibia.
After trailing 14-25 and 17-25 in the first two sets, the team rallied to win 25-19, 25-22, and 18-16 in the subsequent sets.
However, not all Malawi teams had success. The Malawi Under-20 Women’s National Football Team suffered a 6-3 loss to Zimbabwe, finishing bottom of Group A with just one point, which eliminated them from the Cosafa Under-20 Women’s Championship.
