Malawi’s Zomba central hospital health workers boycott duties due salary arrears

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Health workers at Malawi’s Zomba Central Hospital have today put their tools down in a bid to pressure management at the hospital to pay them their salary and allowance arrears.

The sit in has virtually rendered operations in all departments of the hospital dysfunctional.

According to one of the workers, management has, since October last year, been economical with the truth by telling them that they will receive the said arrears soon, but to no avail.

“We are here, actually, we have started a sit in today. The reason why we are doing this sit in is because we feel like management is not doing what it is supposed to do. We haven’t been paid our arrears. And unfortunately, the arrears we haven’t been paid are from around 2014.

“So, we started engaging with management since October, 2018, but until now there is nothing that is happening on the ground. We are not receiving our arrears. So, today we thought we stage a sit in so that at least we can get our salary and promotion arrears which have accumulated for some years for some of us,” said the worker.

Meanwhile, the hospital management and the Ministry of Health and Population have not been readily available for a comment.

This industrial action at the hospital comes amidst reports that Malawi has registered four confirmed cases of Covid 19; a disease that has claims thousands of lives world over.
